Strategically positioned fort covering an area of 47 ha, housing almost 1,200 soldiers to control the southern access to Metz.

The Verny fort, named Feste Wagner by the German troops, was built under their influence between 1904 and 1910. Due to its proximity to the Franco-German border, its position was highly strategic. Stretching over an area of 47 hectares, nearly 1,200 soldiers occupied this monster of steel and concrete. A true guardian of the Seille valley, the fort mainly controlled access to the south of Metz. On the infantry side, there were still three battleship batteries (with cannons), four artillery observatories and a central power plant, all linked by an astonishing network of underground galleries stretching more than 1,600 m!

Tip: to prepare for your visit, bring closed-toe walking shoes and long-sleeved clothing (cool, damp interior, temperature between 11 and 13°C).
