THE EARTHENWARE CASINO
This casino is a place of meeting and entertainment with a cultural vocation
Paul de Geiger, director of the Sarreguemines faience factory, was a conscientious boss with his employees! In 1878, he had the Casino des Faïenceries built. It was a meeting place and a place of cultural entertainment, and also housed a library, a theater and a gym. "A healthy mind in a healthy body" could have been the motto of the workers of the faience factory. Even if the bichrome brick facing (red and white) predominates the whole, the facade of the casino is nicely decorated with ceramic panels signed by Alexandre Sandier. Here and there we can see birds, female figures, arabesques, floral and plant motifs. As for the colors, from pastel tones to bright hues, they are harmonious to perfection. The building dates from the 1880s and is part of the historicist architectural movement, which heralded the Art Nouveau movement. On the right, you will notice an elegant bandstand, built in the purest 19th century style. Since 1998, all the buildings are protected as historical monuments. Today, the first floor of the former casino is occupied by a brasserie called "Brasserie du Casino", a must in Sarreguemines, where you can enjoy a meal on the terrace when the weather is fine. This place offers a unique atmosphere to the restaurant. You can taste wines and regional cuisine. The customers bring back to life these spaces and thus immerse themselves in the richness of the past!
