Paul de Geiger, director of the Sarreguemines earthenware factory, was a conscientious boss of his employees! In 1878, he had the Casino des Faïenceries built. A cultural meeting place and entertainment center, it also housed a library, theater and gymnasium. "A healthy mind in a healthy body" could have been the motto of the workers at the faience factory. Although predominantly clad in bichrome brick (red and white), the casino's façade is beautifully decorated with ceramic panels by Alexandre Sandier. Birds, female figures, arabesques, floral and plant motifs can be seen here and there. As for the colors, from pastel shades to bright hues, they are harmonious to perfection. Dating from the 1880s, this building is part of the historicist architectural movement that heralded Art Nouveau. On the right, you'll notice an elegant bandstand, built in the purest 19th-century style. Since 1998, all the buildings have been protected as historic monuments. Today, the former casino is home to an auditorium and a brasserie known as the "Brasserie du Casino", a must-visit address in Sarreguemines, where you can enjoy a meal on the terrace when the weather's fine.
