THE ALTSCHLOSSFELSEN ROCK
An impressive rock named "Old Castle Rock", in homage to the remains of a fortress that once stood here.
Accessible from a small village in the Bitche area called Roppeviller, Altschlossfelsen means "old castle rock", probably in homage to the remains of a fortress that once sat on this promontory. After a good hour's walk, passing an ancient Roman road and an impressive Canadian-style forest, you'll realize that you've been treated to a fabulous change of scenery. Anyone who has ever visited Arizona's famous canyons, or seen them in a news report, can't help but see a similarity. In fact, it's not for nothing that the Altschlossfelsen is called the "little Colorado" of the Pays de Bitche! In the midst of these giant, several-metre-high rocks, you feel humble and small! This impressive rock, in various shades of red, is over a kilometer long and 15 to 20 metres high. It's a place to let go and marvel. It's an easy, family-friendly hike, starting in Roppeviller and following the signposted path from the church parking lot. The loop is 6 km long, and will take you at least 2 hours, and certainly longer if you include photo stops. Please note that from March to June, certain rocks are protected, as they are home to the nests of protected birds such as the common raven and the peregrine falcon. Please observe the signs restricting access.
