The hill of Sion, a sanctuary dedicated to Mary and an important place of pilgrimage in Saxon-Sion
Located 37 km from Nancy, the hill of Sion overhangs the Saintois territory and offers a panoramic view on the surrounding territories. No less than 85 neighboring villages and a magnificent view of the Vosges ridge, a dazzling spectacle, in good weather, of course. At an altitude of 545 meters and a surface of 5 km, we are in the presence of a geological hillock witnessing the reliefs of the Moselle coast. Economic and political center since the Bronze Age, it became a sanctuary dedicated to Mary and an important place of pilgrimage. Also witness to the reunification of Alsace-Lorraine, its natural environments constitute a remarkable ecological heritage with more than 150 ha of dry limestone lawns and traditional mirabel tree orchards, but also marine fossils, called by the locals "the stars of Sion". The hill of Sion is one of the rare sites in France with such a rich archaeological heritage dating back thousands of years. It is therefore not only a destination for excursions and walks for many families in the region, but also for visitors passing through and above all a formidable witness that mixes past and present. Without forgetting the numerous pilgrims who gather there every year.
The Cité des Paysages regularly organizes, in collaboration with local partners, excursions to discover nature and the landscape. These excursions are accessible to young and old and unless otherwise stated, are generally free of charge. A nice place to discover.
