MINE MUSÉE DU VAL-DE-FER
A site with an old gallery representing the industrial origins of Neuves-Maisons, and a steelworks site.
The Mémoire Ouvrière workshop set up this visit by fitting out an old working gallery of 1874 over 300 m, which became a powder magazine in 1955. You will walk through the gallery to get an idea of what it was like to work by hand in the mines. On the surface, you will discover the 7 ha of the mining tile through explanatory panels, and will be able to admire the breathtaking view of the steel port of Neuves-Maisons, the first in France. The electric furnace, replacing the blast furnaces, now has a capacity of one million tonnes of long steel products (wire), the site being the leading European supplier in its speciality. On the tile, you can also see a "Zublin" ore accumulator from the 1930s, a group of sixteen silos with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes of iron ore, listed as a Historic Monument in Lorraine since 1992. The former miners who have reopened the site guide visitors and explain their work and the industrial origins of Neuves-Maisons, a mining and steelmaking area that is still as important as ever. An exciting visit and a duty to remember!
