THE ROMANESQUE CHURCH OF THE MOUTIER
The Romanesque church of Moutier, an architectural treasure trove of sculptures and paintings in Felletin.
Rebuilt in the 15th century after a fire, the church dedicated to Saint Valerie is adorned with one of the most original bell towers in Creuse and a flamboyant ogival style portico. The third floor is decorated with statues of apostles with, above, carved gargoyles, an openwork balustrade, all topped by a lantern roof. Restoration work has brought to light beautiful mural paintings, dating from the 14th to the 19th century. Note that of Saint Martin cutting his mantle and the angels in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. The church also houses painted wooden statues, 19th century stalls and baroque altarpieces. The one on the high altar was made by François Duhamel, a 17th century Corrèze sculptor. The view from the church bell tower is not to be missed: a panorama of the sloping roofs of this quiet village with the Plateau de Millevaches as a backdrop. In front of you, the Lycée des Métiers du Bâtiment (Building Trades College) as a nod to the famous Masons of La Creuse.
