FORT SAINT-ELME
A fort created to combat Moorish raids, it is now a place dedicated to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Situated on a peak 160 meters above sea level, between Collioure and Port-Vendres, "the sentinel of the Côte Vermeille" was built in the 16th century under Charles V (Roussillon belonged to the Kingdom of Spain at the time) on the foundations of a watchtower to combat raids by the Moors. This masterpiece of military architecture, redesigned by Vauban, is now a cultural site dedicated to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with hundreds of 16th-century weapons on display and dozens of exotic plants in the garden. From Fort Saint-Elme, and especially from the terraces atop the tower, you'll have a breathtaking 360-degree view of the entire coastline from Collioure to Sète, and as far as Canigó and the Albères and Corbières ranges. To make learning about the fort as fun as possible, children's groups can enjoy a range of activities and games. Access to the underground passages is also possible (by appointment for both activities, details on the site). Fort Saint-Elme can be reached by car from Port Vendres, but is well worth a visit on foot (approx. 30 min walk and climb) from Collioure along the path leading from the Museum of Modern Art. Alternatively, you can take the little tourist train up to the site and then return down the Chemin du Moulin. Alternatively, follow the ridge path northwards, then turn right through the terraced vineyards (yellow signposted path).

On n'a rien vu...
