Castle in Roujan, where you can visit a Romanesque church from the 12th century, the last vestige of the Priory, and an episcopal palace from the 17th century
Cassan was given over to religious worship by Charlemagne in 805. It was provided with a chapel in 1080. From the 12th century, the prosperity of the place was such that the viscounts of Béziers chose it as the burial place of their dynasty. Nowadays, a 12th century Romanesque church, the last vestige of the Priory, and an episcopal palace, built in the 17th century, stand side by side there. Take the time to visit it, the view on the west facade, imposing with its 65 meters long and its multiple windows is worth the detour alone.

Welcome to the Château-Abbaye de Cassan in Roujan, where a 12th century Romanesque church, a majestic Romanesque building with a full arch, the last vestige of the Priory, and a conventual palace designed according to the impeccable canons of 18th century aesthetics, which earned it the name of a small "Versailles in Languedoc".
The origins of the Priory date back to the 11th century, when a donation gave the church to a few regular canons fleeing the then decadent cathedral chapter of Béziers. Over time, its eventful history led to multiple transformations linked to its various occupants, as well as to numerous episodes of devastation, which transformed the domain.
The building was partially listed in the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques as early as 1953 and its church was listed as a Monuments Historiques. More recently, in 1998, a large part of it was listed as a Monuments Historiques.
Today, the monument allows us to understand the importance and influence that the monastery once had. Treat yourself to a majestic setting for a self-guided tour, in a group or individually, during a seminar, a guided tour or a concert near Pézenas.
For our 2022 season, the tourist reception will start on Saturday April 16th until Sunday October 30th but will remain open for groups all year long.

Visité un dimanche, le château-abbaye de Cassan m'a impressionnée. Ce site magnifique, pourtant méconnu, est un véritable joyau du patrimoine français.
Par le passé il a malheureusement été confié à des structures malveillantes qui l’ont dégradé, ce qui est profondément révoltant au vu de sa valeur historique et culturelle. Le jardin permet de percevoir encore la splendeur passée du lieu.
Malgré cela, l’âme du château est toujours bien présente. C'est très émouvant.
Il est grand temps que les Français soutiennent davantage leur patrimoine. Pour 8 euros, cette visite mérite largement le détour.

L'intérieur est en cours de réfection j'imagine, mais un sacré potentiel ... Dommage certaines pièces ne sont pas ouvertes au public. J'ai adoré la cuisine et l'herboristerie !
Bon courage pour les rénovations à venir , ça ne doit pas être facile !
