The construction of Chapelle Expiatoire ended in the first half of the 19th century, its work was commanded by Louis XVIII. The building, with its infamous reputation, is reminiscent of the darkest hours of the Revolution and the Terror. The walls are erected at the location of the former Madeleine Cemetery, where the bodies of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were buried before transferring their remains to the Basilica of Saint Denis. The style of the chapel is reminiscent of neo-classicism, a very sought-after aesthetic under the reign of Louis XVI.
