The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was created to showcase Portuguese and, more generally, Portuguese-speaking culture according to the wishes of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869-1955), a British businessman who lived in Lisbon from 1942 until his death. It offers the services of a library, as well as exhibitions, shows and conferences in a sumptuous mansion that belonged to its founder. It was built on the plans of the Sanson architect in 1895 and was renovated in the 1920 s. His style is shooter with neo-classicism and Art Deco aesthetics.
