All year round, the Valmy and Jemmapes wharves along the Saint-Martin Canal are reserved for pedestrians on Sundays between rue des Écluses-Saint-Martin, rue des Récollets, rue Louis-Blanc, rue Alexandre-Parodi, rue Robert-Blache and the corner of rue Bichat. Enjoyed by the booties and trendy people of the capital, this district is teeming with bars and restaurants that rival each other in their decorative efforts, lining up charming little terraces where it is pleasant to think you are in a provincial village. Before comfort, effort can occur on the 4.5 km that connect the bassin de la Villette to the port of l'Arsenal. Inaugurated on 4 November 1825, the Saint-Martin canal prevented boats from crossing Paris by the meandering Seine, by connecting the Ourcq canal to the Seine. The old-fashioned charm of the locks works perfectly, and the metal walkways with wooden steps offer an extra effort opportunity for the more sporty. The bravest will continue their journey towards the 19th arrondissement as far as La Villette via the Loire and Marne quays, along the Villette basin and the Ourcq canal.
