Little Napoleon was baptized here on July 21, 1771. The cathedral housed the funeral chapel of the Bonaparte family until the imperial chapel was built under the Second Empire. At first glance, the cathedral is striking for its modest dimensions. The Latin cross plan features a barely defined transept, and the three interior naves seem too short for their proportions in height and width. But the seven side chapels, the imposing dome and, above all, the ochre-colored Baroque façade exude a unique charm.

La cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption ou cathédrale Santa Maria Assunta d’Ajaccio, située dans la ville génoise, fut inaugurée en 1593 ; elle se rattache au diocèse d'Ajaccio. Napoléon Ier y est baptisé le 21 juin 17711.
