THE PLACE D'ARMES AND THE GODDESS AT THE MARNE
The Place d'Armes and the Goddess of the Marne, whose construction dates from 1842, attributed to the master founder Muel
At the intersection of the four main arteries of the city. Over the centuries, many buildings have been added to this square: a courthouse in 1548, then a wooden church replaced in 1629 by the collegiate church, and then several houses. A beautiful fountain, surmounted by a statue to the glory of the Marne, is now in the center. It is called here "the Goddess", following a beautiful tradition common to poetry and sculpture of personification of rivers. Its construction dates from 1842 and is attributed to the master founder Muel. Placed on a pedestal, this cast iron statue represents a woman holding an oar in her hand, symbol of the navigable Marne, and a cornucopia in the other, which certainly reflects the wealth of the Vitry region in the 19th century.
