ABBEY CHURCH SAINT TROPHIME
Romanesque abbey church in Eschau with tombstones and stained glass windows from the period, with information sheets on its history
For 750 years (770-1525), Eschau was home to a community of Benedictine nuns. On this "Roman Road", a hospital for pilgrims was founded in 1143. This Romanesque abbey church is one of Europe's finest examples of the Carolingian-Ottoman low-transept basilica. A sandstone sarcophagus contains the relics of Saint Sophia. Admire the statues of saints, some dating back to 1500! Funerary slabs and 19th-century stained-glass windows are also on display. Information sheets on the history of the building are available.
