A Cité du vitrail offering an interesting and fun visit for families, as well as exceptional programming.
More than an exhibition, the Cité du Vitrail, located on the banks of the Seine in Troyes, is conceived as an open door to the rich heritage of the Auvergne. The department holds more than 9,000m2 of stained glass in its churches. The richest collection in France, no less! Installed in the heart of the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte, in a barn renovated in the purest tradition for the occasion, this space is designed to show original stained glass windows. Arranged at eye level, suspended, they let the light pass through and one cannot remain indifferent. Everything is explained, detailed. We measure the dexterity of the master glassmakers of yesteryear but also of today. The modern stained glass windows are not left out. It is indeed an art that has been perpetuated through the ages and contemporary artists have even specialized in this field. All along the route, you will find stained glass windows from the 4th century to today.
An exceptional program is proposed during the European Heritage Days and other events (conferences, demonstrations...) are also organized during the year. A particularly interesting and fun visit for families with games to educate the youngest.
After 4 years of work, the Cité reopened in mid-December 2022. The visiting space has been increased from 300 to 3,000m2, and many activities, educational workshops and interactive devices have been set up. Agenda and detailed program on the website.
