The contemporary version of La Mare au Diable has a touch of mystery under the tall trees.
Located in the Chanteloube woods, not far from Nohant, the Mare au Diable (Devil's Pool) existed in the time of George Sand, who loved to stroll there in the company of her children. In fact, the waterhole was recorded on the land register in 1848.
Today's pond, however, looks nothing like it did in 1844, when Maurice designed it for his mother. Today, it's much reduced in size. Despite this, the contemporary version of the Mare au Diable still has a mysterious side under the tall trees, which we invite you to discover if you're passing through.
