March 25, Greece's national holiday, commemorates the revolution of March 25, 1821, which liberated Greece from the Ottoman Empire.
March 25 is one of Greece's two national holidays (along with October 28). It commemorates the revolution of March 25, 1821, the start of the Greek War of Independence. It was on this date that the Greeks began their insurrection against the Ottoman Empire, which had occupied the country for 400 years. This national holiday is the occasion to bring out the Greek flags, which are sold everywhere and which you'll see blooming along the roadsides. There are many parades: students, schoolchildren in traditional costumes and military personnel.
