Timetable
Whilst supermarkets and international brand stores remain open without interruption from 9am to 8pm, small shops take a break from 12.30pm to 1pm to 3.30pm to 4pm. They are generally open from Monday to Saturday, but some stores in the big cities are also open on Sundays, even if this day is generally a day off.
Budget & Tips
We recommend that you stock up on gourmet products such as charcuterie, parmesan, balsamic vinegar and wine... Buying at source, i.e. directly from the producer, is much cheaper than going to a shop or shopping online, because you avoid the middleman. What's more, you get to taste the products you buy. Of course, if you don't have a car, you'll need to find enough room in your luggage. Contact the producer to arrange for the parcel to be delivered direct to your home.
Sales
In Italy, the winter sales start in early January, at the end of the Christmas vacations, on the Monday following or the last weekend of the vacations, and run until late February or early March. In summer, sales start at the beginning of July and end in mid-August. In recent years, Italy has adopted Black Friday, a commercial event that originated in the United States and takes place on the Friday following Thanksgiving, in November.
Tourist traps
The destination being less touristy than Venice or Florence, souvenir shops are not legion. However, T-shirts with the effigy of the region, snow globes and magnets made in China are well present on the shelves of the shops. If it's tempting to bring back a gadget from your holiday, favour local and authentic items to encourage the region's economy.
