GAOL BEAUMARIS

Monuments to visit

The doors open, and you're transported back to the prison world of the 19th century: instruments of torture, prisoners' names engraved on the walls, remind us of the fate of these men who weren't always dangerous criminals. In 1840, Gaynor Jones was sentenced to a month's hard labor for stealing some milk. The women prisoners, separated from the men, did the cooking and were sometimes allowed to cradle their children born within the walls... We stroll through the rooms, witness to gloomy anecdotes.

OYSTERMOUTH CASTLE

Castles to visit

The medieval castle offers a splendid view of the bay. It was built in the 12th century by Henri de Beaumont, Duke of Gower. As his main residence was built on the current Swansea site, Oystermouth Castle was in fact primarily intended to expand the northwestern surveillance field. The strange appearance of the main façade comes from the absence of the two towers that should have flanked its entrance; they were never built. Even when closed, the castle and park are still worth a look.

BRACELET BAY & MUMBLES LIGHTHOUSE

Monuments to visit

Built in 1897, the pretty Pier was a place of relaxation for Victorian and Edwardian society. You can walk on the footbridge above the sea or stop in the café of the kiosk at the summer tone. Behind the Pier is a tiny little beach that overlooks two small islets of rock, the famous "Mumbles". The lighthouse is on one of them and the other rocky promontory, accessible at low tide, is a delight for fishermen and the curious..

PUFFIN ISLAND CRUISES

Natural Crafts

It's a very popular attraction. You should visit Puffin Island (Ynys Seiriol in Welsh), the island north of Beaumaris, populated by these red-beaked birds with their distinctive general appearance. Seals can also be seen there. Please note that departures vary according to the number of bookings and the weather, so it is best to call and book in advance. In May-June, the escapade is all the more interesting as the puffins that populate the island by thousands feed their chicks. And they're absolutely not afraid.

ERDDIG HALL & COUNTRY PARK

Specialized museum

In a sumptuous late 18th century manor house, the life of a provincial bourgeois family was staged. The rooms are beautifully furnished with the furniture, tapestries and accessories of yesteryear giving a very realistic picture of what a domestic interior looked like at the time. Certainly one of the most beautiful historic houses in the country. The impressive gardens, crossed by a canal, respect the style of the 18th century flowerbeds. Spectacular.

CHIRK CASTLE

Castles to visit

Very pleasant visit in a very different castle. We are here in a beautiful house built in 1300, on the model of Beaumaris, but whose interior dates mainly from the 18th century (rich furniture, majestic staircase, Mortlake tapestries ...). The building is still partly inhabited by the Myddelton family since 1595, when their ancestor bought the castle for £5,000.

Don't miss the superb park, a small jewel of English gardens, laid out at the end of the 18th century by a great British landscape architect Lancelot "Capability" Brown.

BLESSING STONE

Local history and culture

On the banks of the River Teifi, the stone called "Blessing Stone"is known to have been used in pre-Christian times and may have been extracted from a cromlech. Legend has it that the spirit of the river appeared here in the form of a fish. When the monks settled in the village, they recycled the aura of this stone, blessing the fishermen before they set out to sea.

Today, we see nothing but flat stone, sheltered by shrubs forming a plant niche around it. Very nice view.

VALLE CRUCIS ABBEY

Abbey monastery and convent

"La Vallée de la Croix" is a deliciously peaceful place, where meditation is a must. This Cistercian abbey is much better preserved than its twin Strata Florida. The Cistercian monks who sought isolation settled in this green and secluded countryside at the foot of the steep mountains of Llangollen. When you pass through the still valiant doors of the abbey, it is a journey through time. Here we are in the austere daily life of these disciples of God. Many of the architectural ornaments have survived the centuries.

ST. COLLEN'S CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

The origin of the town's name, this church was erected in honor of St. Collen, an Irish warrior and religious figure of the 7th century. The most interesting feature is the 15th-century ceiling: an oak framework, finely carved with angels and Celtic motifs, which is thought to have come from Valle Crucis Abbey in the village of Llantysilio. The adjacent cemetery is well worth a visit: it contains the graves of the two ladies of Llangollen. For the record, Collen means hazel tree.

Plas Newydd was the home of two Irish women, Eleanore Butler and Sarah Ponsonby. It was not customary in 1780 for two women to leave their families and countries in order to escape their destiny as "daughters of a good family" and settle together. We discover today the universe of these two aesthetes who surrounded themselves with beautiful objects. Large mirrors, carved dark wood fireplaces and sophisticated furniture give their homes a Gothic feel. Many poets and intellectuals came to visit the "demoiselles de Llangollen".

BEAUMARIS CASTLE

Castles to visit

Last castle of the Iron Ring, the iron belt erected by Edward I of England to contain the Welsh, it is not completely finished but very well preserved.

Begun in 1295, it uses the technique of "walls within walls" - to make it even more invincible although it has never known a battle. It therefore combines double enclosure structures, typical of the 13th century, with a central plan. Enjoy a walk on the walls to soak up the atmosphere and admire the view from its superb position overlooking the Menai Strait.

ARTHUR'S STONE

Monuments to visit

The site is dated around 2500 BC. Arthur's Stone, a former burial chamber, is a fifteen-ton stone that rests on six others. However, before 1693, this rock was much larger, until an incident broke it and dropped more than ten tons. Mystery still reigns around this event. Countless legends exist, including that of King Arthur, who, embarrassed by a stone in his shoe, threw it away with force. He fell eleven kilometres further on, on Cefn Bryn, having accumulated magical powers during his flight.

SENEDD (NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR WALES)

Contemporary architecture

Senedd (pronounced "Senn-eth") is the seat of the National Assembly for Wales. The National Assembly was formed in 1999, following the 1997 referendum on devolution. In 1997, more than 50% of voters were in favor, whereas in 1979, 80% voted no in the same referendum. This second vote represents a significant milestone in the centuries-old history ofdevolution .

Since its inauguration in 2006, it has become one of the country's most symbolic buildings. It is a model of ecology and transparency, designed by architect Richard Rogers. It features glass walls and a focus on renewable energies. For example, ventilation is natural, and rainwater is recycled to supply the toilets. Its magnificent wooden roof, reminiscent of the movement of waves, is made from red cedar from the sustainably managed forests of British Columbia, and South Wales steel.

The galleries (on the first floor) are open to the public: you can attend a plenary session attended by the Assembly's sixty members. Don't worry, headphones are available to listen to the English translation of any debate in Welsh. It's a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Welsh politics!

From 1999 to the opening of the Senedd in 2006, plenary sessions of the Assembly were held at Crickhowell House (behind the Senedd).
