MAKAR SANKRANTI

This Hindu festival pays tribute to the deity Surya (the sun) and takes place when the sun transits through Capricorn (Makara). It is also called Magha Mela in central India, Magh Bihu in Assam... Several celebrations take place throughout the country. On the program: offerings of course, parties, demonstrations of traditional arts, dances, kite flying competitions, fireworks, gifts of sweets to children ... This festival is celebrated with fervor in Uttar Pradesh and fairs are held along the river ghats.
