November 8 commemorates the sacrifice of the Cretans who took refuge in the Arkadi monastery, preferring to die rather than surrender to the Turks.
National holiday in Crete, in honor of the tragedy that took place at the Arkadi monastery in 1866. It's a public holiday in Rethymnon. On this occasion, a solemn mass is held in commemoration of the 1,000 Cretan men, women and children who took their own lives by setting fire to the monastery's powder magazine, where they had locked themselves away to escape reprisals by the Ottoman occupiers. A grand parade takes place through the main streets of Rethymnon, with the participation of schoolchildren and the Greek armed forces.
