Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Crete
Timetable
Shops and stores are generally open from 9am to 2pm and from 5pm to 9pm. In very touristy areas, shops and souvenir shops remain open between 10am and 11.30pm.
Budget & Tips
In the most touristy areas, where the offer abounds, compare prices in a few shops before you shop: this way you can try to negotiate.
Sales
The summer sales period in Crete and Greece in general starts on the second Monday of July and lasts until the end of August. In winter, the sales start on the second Monday of January and last until the end of February. Several offers lasting about ten days are very often announced in May or October.
What's very local
All the foodstuffs available in specialist stores are recommended: cheeses (Cretan Gruyere), olive oil, olives, honey, herbs, teas, spices and, of course, raki. Handicrafts such as jewelry, reproductions of museum objects, Byzantine icons, ceramics, tanners' products, fabrics and Cretan knives are all great local gifts to bring home.
Tourist traps
Souvenir stores are overflowing with all kinds of objects. Try to trust your personal taste and, to be sure of the quality, you'll have to look at the prices: handicrafts are a little more expensive and always signed. Food products such as oil, honey and herbs are of excellent quality and can be found in specialized stores and boutiques.
