AÉROPORT
Read moreThe Tripoli International Airport, in Qasr Ben Gashir, for some time retains its old face, namely a single human-sized terminal, in which different shades of green are descended from the Jamahiriya's emblem. The style is more sober than a few years ago, when a profusion of Green Paper slogans stood in different places. Very soon, however, the airport will make new skin. Announced in September 2007, the construction of two new terminals is expected to be completed in the next few years. The airport would thus have a capacity of 3 million to 20 million passengers, with a view to making it a new hub between the countries of the North and the African continent.
Just under one kilometre from the international terminal, a small national terminal has been renovated and reopened (left of the roundabout leading to the international airport). Between the two terminals, there are a few free minibuses, but sometimes you have to take the taxi at prohibitive prices because drivers sometimes ask 10 DL for a race that is worth no more than 2 DL.
If your visa is issued upon arrival at the airport, as is now possible, a member of the local travel agency having made your invitation to the territory will take the step for you in a few minutes (you will have first travelled with a copy of your formal letter of invitation). If you are already in possession of the visa, your passage will take place quickly, checks and checks are not too rigorous. Remember, however, that it is strictly forbidden to carry alcohol in your luggage. If necessary, you will be subject to confiscation and other inconvenience proportional to the quantity held.
If you need to change aircraft for a national destination, please check because you may need to recover your baggage at the international terminal before transporting them to the national terminal where you will need to register them again.
You can change your money in the main lobby at the national banks, including the Goumouhirya bank open 24 hours a day. Visa® and Mastercard® card ticket distributors have been installed in the lobby where there is also a MoneyGram® money transfer service.
Services. In the main lobby there are various airline counters, car rental agencies, a small cafeteria and two small shops, which can be useful for returning to meals the famous show of Colonel Gaddafi, whose tourists are so fond of their effigie. A cafeteria, a first class space, a duty-free shop (accepting Visa card) and a souvenir shop, a mailbox, a distributor for MasterCard and a small Internet café are also available on the floor.
Taxis. To travel to Tripoli, km from the airport, black and white taxis await you at the parking lot. The race price is between 10 and 15 DL during the day and 15 to 20 DL in the evening. For other destinations, it is possible to address from the airport lobby at the El-Bashayer taxi company counter, Tripoli race 10 DL and other possible destinations such as Sabratha (35 DL), Sebha (120 DL), Benghazi (200 DL).
BURAQ AIR
Read moreThe young private Libyan company El-Buraq currently offers between 2 and 4 daily flights from Tripoli to Benghazi (flight duration 1 hour 10, 72,5 DL price 120 single and DL return). It also offers a weekly flight from Tripoli to Sebha (1 hour flight, departure at 20 h 30). Flights and schedules of flights based on seasons can be done on the company's website, as well as reservations, but the latter service is sometimes unavailable. Two years ago, the flights of Buraq were known for their punctuality, which is no longer the case. The company has good airplanes, but it can sometimes happen that it uses airplanes from a charter company.
Previously, the departure of Buraq aircraft was carried out at Mitiga International Airport. They now depart from the new national terminal located next to Tripoli International airport. However, it would appear that during the important work that is going to be carried out by the latter, Buraq flights can leave Mitiga Airport: Check with a Buraq agency.
If you have to go to this airport (about 8 km from the city centre, opposite the corniche on the road to Tajoura), please tell your taxi (in Arabic «Matar El-Mitiga»), otherwise it would lead you to the other airport («Matar Trablous el-Alami»).
