Practical information : Eating out Bahrain
Timetable
Most inexpensive restaurants open early in the morning and close late at night, every day. Some, however, close every Friday morning for prayer. More upscale establishments generally offer lunch and dinner service. At weekends, the most popular restaurants are very busy, so reservations are strongly recommended.
Budget & Tips
In Bahrain, mid-range restaurants are few and far between. With a few exceptions, they are mainly either inexpensive or rather upmarket. Expect to pay between BHD 1 and BHD 5 for a meal in a local restaurant, between BHD 5 and BHD 15 for a mid-range restaurant, and BHD 15 or more for the most luxurious restaurants.
What costs extra
In the vast majority of restaurants, 10% VAT is already included in the menu price. For tips, count 10% of the final bill, only if you've enjoyed the service.
The local way
In Bahrain, you may eat with your hands, but cutlery is almost always present. Although Bahrainis are fond of spices, dishes are generally not very spicy, except in Indian restaurants.
To be avoided
Never touch food with your left hand, which is reserved for intimate hygiene. If you must eat with your hands, then only with your right!
Kids
In Bahrain, children are always welcome in restaurants, and some even have activities to keep them occupied.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in enclosed public places in Bahrain, including restaurants. However, some restaurants have smoking rooms.
Tourist traps
In Bahrain, an unpleasant surprise at checkout time is almost unheard of. If there is a mistake, it's usually unintentional.
