From the airport to the city centre Northern Macedonia

The country has two international airports. Skopje airport has shuttle buses to the city center. Ohrid does not, but as the city center is close by, cab fares are inexpensive. Direct flights to France are rare, and only operate two or three times a week from Paris-Beauvais and Basel-Mulhouse. There are also flights from Brussels-Charleroi, Luxembourg and, above all, Switzerland (Geneva, Zurich, Basel-Mulhouse). In the vicinity of Northern Macedonia, Thessaloniki airport (Greece) offers the best international connections: year-round with Paris-Beauvais, Brussels-National, Brussels-Charleroi, Luxembourg and Zurich; in summer with Paris-Roissy, Paris-Orly, Basel-Mulhouse and Geneva. By bus, there is a daily connection between Thessaloniki and Skopje bus stations.

Arrival by train Northern Macedonia

International connections with Serbia and Greece have been suspended. But work is in progress. Eventually, there will be connections with Belgrade (Serbia), Thessaloniki (Greece), Sofia (Bulgaria) and possibly Tirana (Albania). The domestic rail network, meanwhile, is limited to a few links from Skopje, mainly to Veles and Povardarie. No improvement before 2027.

Public transport Northern Macedonia

Buses are the best means of transport in the country if you don't have a car. There is no website listing all possible connections, timetables and fares. However, information boards are available at bus stations.

By car Northern Macedonia

North Macedonia is easily accessible from Serbia or Greece via the European freeway E-75 (local section A 1), which links Belgrade to Thessalonica via Skopje and Povardarie. Freeway tolls apply. With a normal car, expect to pay around 300 MKD (€5) in tolls to cross the country from north to south on the A 1 freeway, and 70 MKD on the A 2 freeway between Skopje and Gostivar via Tetovo. Payment at toll booths is by credit card or cash. Euros are accepted (with a surcharge), but only 50-centime, €1 and €2 coins, not other coins or banknotes. Parking is complicated in big cities. Choose hotels with parking facilities.

Tourist traps Northern Macedonia

There aren't really any tourist attractions to report in Northern Macedonia. But for a long cab ride, it's best to negotiate the amount before departure.
