Enjoying yourself en Slovaquie

Timetable Timetable en Slovaquie

Slovaks generally eat their meals earlier than in France. Lunch from 11am and dinner around 7pm, especially at weekends when they go out to the theatre or the opera. They then eat before going to the show, so that some restaurants are deserted from 8:30 pm. After the show, it's rather the Krčma that fills up, and the beer then flows. Restaurants often serve non-stop between 11:30 am and 9 pm and sometimes even earlier in the provinces and later in the capital

Budget & Tips Budget & Tips en Slovaquie

Easy and cheaper to eat at the restaurant at lunchtime! The majority of the country's restaurants offer a "Denne menu", a weekday lunch menu (2 to 4 choices of soup + main course, often with a salad buffet) for a price of between €3.50 and €5.50. That's how Slovaks eat lunch, and it's good. So there's no reason to save up by just trying to make yourself a sandwich for lunch.

What costs extra What costs extra en Slovaquie

In Slovak restaurants the displayed dishes usually do not include the topping, there is a menu page that will show the toppings of your choice to be added. Bread and sauces are to be paid extra and the locals do not drink water in carafe even if it is possible to ask for it (čistú vodu/tchistou vodou). There is no obligation, but the local standard is to leave a tip of 5-10% of your bill if you are satisfied with your meal and service. If you stop for a simple coffee or a beer, a tip is also welcome, rounding up your bill: waiters are not paid much and often get only 3 € per hour!

The local way The local way en Slovaquie

It's very local to eat (hot) soup every day of the year even in summer when it's thirty-five degrees!

Kids Kids en Slovaquie

You can easily visit local restaurants without restrictions, as a family with your children. Some are more suitable than others and have, for example, a play area.

Smokers Smokers en Slovaquie

Each establishment can choose its own policy in terms of tobacco consumption and the vast majority of establishments are non-smoking.

Tourist traps Tourist traps en Slovaquie

In the historic centre of Bratislava, you will be presented with attractive "tourist menus" translated into all languages by our staff. Of course, they work for unscrupulous establishments that take advantage of their good location to mountain passersby and sell fast and expensive recipes of so-called local specialities. Avoid them and try to stay away from overly touristy routes for lunch or your break.

Take a break en Slovaquie

Timetable Timetable en Slovaquie

Cafés and tea rooms are generally open every day from 8 am to 10 pm. Bars open later, from 11am or even around 5pm for some exclusively nocturnal establishments. Most mainstream establishments close their doors around midnight, but many bars and nightclubs stay open until 3am and even until dawn for some. The beginning of the week is the preferred time for students who have short weeks of classes and who often go home on Thursdays to their parents. The nightlife comes to life at the weekend, with Friday being preferred to Saturday.

Budget & Tips Budget & Tips en Slovaquie

As for the gourmet breaks, you will have no trouble finding cheap pastries or viennoiseries. Espresso coffee is in the same price range as in France, the locals having more of a tea tradition. During the Soviet era coffee was a luxury product and even today shops are still very poorly stocked with expensive coffee of poor quality. On the other hand, this is not the case for its beers, which are of excellent quality and particularly cheap with an average price around €1.50 per pint. Wine is available by the glass or bottle in classic establishments, but rarely of excellent quality. If you're a wine lover, wait until you're in a vinoteka or gourmet restaurant to order wine. It'll be more expensive, but you'll be sure to have something drinkable

Age restrictions Age restrictions en Slovaquie

The sale of alcohol and tobacco is prohibited to minors under the age of 18 in Slovakia. Sometimes there are police raids on bars to check papers.

What's very local What's very local en Slovaquie

It's very local to go to the bar in the evening, fill your belly with beer and even forget to eat dinner!

Kids Kids en Slovaquie

Even if it is not the most ideal place for children, as long as they do not drink alcohol, they are accepted.

Discover la Slovaquie

Slovakia is a small country of 49,036 km² with a maximum length from west to east (from Záhorská Ves to Nová Sedlica) of 428 km and a width from north to south varying between 78 and 195 km (from Štúrovo in the south to Skalité in the north). The country shares 265 km of border with the Czech Republic, 127 km with Austria in the west, 679 km with Hungary in the south, 98 km with Ukraine in the east and 597.5 km with Poland in the north. Nestled in the heart of Europe, Slovakia, despite its size, is full of treasures: a natural heritage with nine national parks for the greatest pleasure of hikers, an ecosystem that preserves a particularly rich vegetation and animal life of which bears, wolves and lynxes are the symbol, a historical heritage with many castles and especially unique wooden churches, especially in the east of Slovakia, fruit of the tumultuous history of the country.
