At the confluence of the San Juan River (border with Nicaragua) and natural or artificial canals in Tortuguero, it is a wetland area of tropical rainforest that is very wet where live, frogs (including tiny red and poisonous frogs), monkeys and lazy, and 240 species of birds. It is also the nesting place of the green turtle. Many thousands arrive on Tortuguero beach between June and August.
