Inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity, this festival honors the memory of the deceased.
Most foreign tourists associate this very popular festival mainly with Mexico, as that is where it actually originated. But this festivity also has spiritual and religious significance throughout the Mesoamerican region and Costa Rica is no exception. Since 2008, the Dia de los Muertos has been included in the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Costa Ricans go to the cemeteries with their families to honor the memory of the dead.
