Timkat, Ethiopia's most spectacular and colorful religious festival, is the celebration of Christ's baptism.

Unquestionably the country's most spectacular and colorful religious festival. Timkat, strangely called Epiphany, is in fact the celebration of Christ's baptism. This is the day on which the procession of tabot (replicas of the tables of the Law enclosed in the Ark of the Covenant) takes place, leaving the churches only on this occasion. They are led to the sound of drums by clerics wearing tiaras, multicolored parasols and ornate crosses, who sing in choirs. Thousands of faithful converge on the main holy sites.

Difficile d'imaginer avant de la vivre vraiment sur place la ferveur de ces habitants et pèlerins qui suivent des processions de prêtres abrités sous des ombrelles colorées ou qui portent l'arche d'alliance. Fête qui dure plusieurs jours et qui regroupe des foules de croyants au son des tambours et de danses. Se rendre si possible en janvier pour pouvoir assister à ces fêtes étonnantes à Lalibela ou à Gondar.
