August 1st celebrates several key dates in Cyprus. A folk festival is held in Nicosia-North.

It marks the end of the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus with the capture of Famagusta on August1, 1571, as well as the founding of the Turkish Cypriot paramilitary organization, the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT), on August1, 1958. Finally, August1, 1976 saw the creation of the "Turkish Cypriot Security Force", now the "Security Forces Command of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus". A folk festival is held in Nicosia-North.
