Carnival, also known as the Calypso Festival, is a music competition in which contenders compete for the titles of king and queen; theSaint Lucia Carnival takes place in July and is a very large street festival that highlights the island's festive spirit. The many music groups are preparing to march through the streets, dressed in brand new costumes against a background of soca music, broadcast by a set of speakers installed on a truck. The main carnival is held on Mondays and Tuesdays and the crowd gathers in Castries to see the colourful costumes and party people invading the streets of the capital. One after the other, the groups come on stage to have their costumes judged. Before the main carnival, beauty contests are organized to choose a national monarch and a junior monarch during a calypso competition. You can attend the election of the carnival queen, five young girls parade in several costumes and show their talent. There is also a carnival for children.
