Budget & Tips
For low-end but well-kept hotels, you should expect to pay between NT$600 and NT$1,700 for a double room. Youth hostels offer dormitory beds for modest sums (NT$600 to NT$1,000). Mid-range hotels offer a quality service in the vast majority of cases, for at least NT$2,000. Rooms in the most luxurious establishments can fetch astronomical sums, and you should expect to pay at least NT$3,500.
To be booked
There are three peak tourist seasons, mainly linked to vacations for mainland Chinese nationals: summer, October and Chinese New Year. Reservations are essential for all three periods.
What's very local
Inspired by Japanese culture, Taiwan is home to many "Love Hotels", reserved for couples looking to spend an intimate moment together. Rooms are rented by the hour and are often extravagantly decorated.
For food lovers
Most budget hotels don't serve breakfast. But in others, the traditional Taiwanese breakfast often consists of congee, a kind of rice porridge that can be topped with meat, vegetables or eggs, Chinese ravioli, grilled pork and seasonal fruit.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in the vast majority of hotels, although there are a few exceptions in the provinces.
Tourist traps
In Taipei's red-light districts, such as Linsen Road or Snake Alley, it's not uncommon for brothel touts to accost you. Avoid at all costs, to avoid unpleasant surprises and to avoid financing the human trafficking associated with this activity.
