HONG KONG MUSEUM OF HISTORY

Specialized museum
5/5
4 reviews

Here is undoubtedly one of the most interesting museums in the city. Built in 1975, it traces Hong Kong's history in several aspects: geological, economic, fauna and flora, people, customs… We will also note the screenings of small films for certain themes (in mini-cinema) which makes it a perfect place for children. Finally, some beautiful archeological and ethnographic pieces as well as old photos complement the collection. There are also reconstituted daily life scenes. An informative and playful visit for all ages.

Located in the north of the city, adjacent to the small administrator's garden, this museum is divided into two parts. The first and oldest, Zhong Wang Fu, is an architectural complex dating back to the time of the kingdom and recounts the history of the city. The second part, inaugurated in October 2006, is nothing more than the work of I.M. Pei, the architect behind the pyramid of the Louvre.

The ensemble includes a fund of over 10 000 pieces among which many Buddhist relics discovered during the rehabilitation of the many places of worship in the city. A wide selection of pottery, porcelain, bronzes and local crafts.

Located inside Hong Kong Park, this charming museum is housed in the oldest colonial house in the territory, the Flagstaff House, built in 1846. She remained the residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces until 1978. The permanent exhibition with tea theme shows an extraordinary collection of more than 600 teapots and objects dedicated to the tea ceremony. They date back to the West Pentecostal dynasty (1050-771 BC). We discover the different methods of preparing tea through ages. In the museum's small shop, tiny teapots, copies of old teapots and beautiful creations of contemporary artists are on sale, as well as art books on tea.

MAHAO CAVES

Natural site to discover

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these tombstones located on the Lingyun mountain near the bridge leading to Wuyou date from the Han period. The graves in themselves do not show great interest in the present state of their presentation, but we are still seeing some beautiful murals. A small but interesting museum, and with explanations in English, presents the objects most representative of the funeral rites of the Han.
