BANIAN GÉANT

Natural site to discover

It is a wonder of nature that this giant banana tree stretches over tens of metres. It is said to have been present in 1774 during James Cook's visit to Tanna. The high entrance fee is explained by the fact that it is the village that must create and maintain the road and path to get there.

MOUNT YASUR

Natural site to discover
5/5
1 review

In the east of Tanna, Mount Yasur is physically imposing and is renowned as the easiest accessible volcano in the world. And for good reason, only a few minutes of walking are enough to reach the summit after being led to the access path. The show is constantly provided by its continuous activity, but it is obviously at sunset and at night that we take our eyes full. It is a must for all holidaymakers in Tanna and Vanuatu, from where one does not return completely indifferent as the experience is unique. Everyone will talk to you about it and it is easy to understand why, even if the price may seem a little high (it increases every year). To get there, it is essential to book a transfer with your accommodation, unless you are staying next door (at theTree Top Lodge, for example), in which case you can walk there. Try to come at the end of the day to fully appreciate the show in all its aspects. The entrance would look almost like an amusement park today (a building was under construction at the time of our visit in May 2018). You buy your entrance, choose the sign bearing the name of the country from which you come and sit near the newly installed Nakamal. The tour begins with a speech and dances, before being driven to the summit in a 4x4 by the site staff, who ensure the safety of small groups of visitors. Remember to bring good shoes, warm clothes and something to cover your face against the smoke (some people even wear diving masks!). Observe the safety instructions to avoid accidents. Once back down, a small snack will be waiting for you. While we regret that this excursion has become more and more expensive over the years, it is still a unique experience and you will quickly want to go back up just as far as the top!

BEACH CHAMPAGNE

Natural site to discover
4/5
2 reviews

Like many beaches in Vanuatu, entry to Champagne Beach is subject to a fee. Despite a much higher cost than most other sites, vacationers who venture there do not regret the investment. A white sand that hurts your eyes, announces an incredible panorama on this turquoise water, in which Elephant Island is bathed. Turtles are often seen there. The place is also ideal for snorkeling. The place is often perfectly quiet. WC and showers.

VATTHE PROTECTED PARK (VATTHE NATIONAL PARK)

Natural site to discover

Covering an area of more than 2 720 hectares, the Vatthe nature reserve (or conservation zone) is the first of Vanuatu to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (in 1994). Alluvial forest is dominated by a peak limestone of nearly 400 m elevation. More than 30 bird species of which 5 were endemic, and more than half of the bird species in Vanuatu live here. One third of the freshwater fish in the archipelago also swim here. A guide is essential for not getting lost in the park, which has already happened. A large number of agencies offer group or group days for a safe excursion.

MATÉVULU BLUE HOLE

Natural site to discover

Although accessible by car, it is by kayak that the Matevulu Blue Hole is best appreciated. From Turtle Bay or Oyster Island, it takes about 40 minutes to go up the river to the terminus, the blue hole. The landscape is magical and the water becomes clearer every meter. On arrival a small area is provided for kayaks and picnics. A ladder and rope allow brave and sporty people to jump up to five metres. Bring shoes as the bottom of the water is uneven. It is better to find out about the arrival days of Australian cruise ships to have the place to yourself.

NANDA BLUE HOLE

Natural site to discover

Unlike Riri or Matévulu, this blue hole is not turquoise, but of a deep and mysterious blue that is just as fascinating. Also known as Jackie Blue Hole, after its owner, the place is very (too?) well arranged and even has a bamboo cabin to change. Built around the blue hole, there is also a large bungalow, a bar, a promenade and a picnic area for hikers. With a depth of more than 20 metres, the (grown-up) children can enjoy jumping while the adults enjoy a coffee and this beautiful place. A natural curiosity that is worth a visit, perfect during hot weather. To avoid a cruise day, the place loses all its charm.
