Indonesia's national holiday is celebrated every year on August 17, to mark the country's independence from the Netherlands in 1945. Every August 17, the country is bursting at the seams with celebrations and festivities: you'll be spoilt for choice! The highlight of the celebrations takes place at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, with the national flag-raising ceremony presided over by the President and Vice-President of Indonesia. You'll find the colors of the Indonesian flag everywhere: red and white seem to drape themselves over every building.
