Kuching International Airport sees a large number of daily flights and is one of the best for connecting the island of Borneo to the mainland. Air Asia, Malyaisia Airlines, MASWings, Malindo, Scoot and Wings Air provide connections to all parts of Borneo, to the peninsula's main cities, and to Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore. Just 11 km from the city center, cabs are the only direct and fast option.

Malacca's bus station is 7.5 km from the city center. Cabs cost RM20 and take around 20 minutes, or take the bus (RM1.40). Created in 1896, this historic railway line was reopened in 2011 for tourism purposes. It runs from Kota Kinabalu to Papar, via Putatan, Kinarut and Kawang, a little over forty kilometers on board carriages pulled by a superb Vulcan steam locomotive. The round trip takes 4h30, with two stops for interesting sights: the Tian Shi temple in Kinarut and the Papar market. A conventional train makes the same journey at a lower cost.

The train station serving Kota Bharu is located 6 km away, on the other side of the Kelantan River. The Tourist Information Centre or the Malaysian Railways website will give you information on timetables. The Jungle Train that connects Kota Bharu to Jerantut and Taman Negara via Gua Musang can be the subject of a sightseeing excursion. The journey takes between 9 and 12 hours. The United Arab Emirates airline offers flights between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Kuala Lumpur, with a stopover in Abu Dhabi, depending on the option. Four daily flights are offered: two depart at 10:20 a.m. and two at 10:20 p.m., arriving in Kuala Lumpur at either 8:25 a.m. or 8:15 p.m. the following day. Journey times vary between 15h55 and 28h. Kota Kinabalu has several bus terminals, depending on the direction the buses take.

The Northern Bus Terminal on Jalan Undan serves Sabah's remote east coast and the towns of Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Semporna and Tawau.

For towns in the west and interior of the state (Kudat, Kota Belud...), buses leave from Padang Merdeka in the city center.

For towns in southern Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, buses leave from the City Park Bus Terminal opposite the High Court Building.

11 km north of the city center, the runway of Sultan Mahmud airport literally juts out into the sea. The terminal may seem a little out of proportion to daily traffic, but it can handle 2 million passengers a year.

The airport was named after the ^28th Sultan of Kelantan, who reigned from 1979 to 2010. It has excellent connections to Kuala Lumpur (KLIA and KLIA2), Johor Baru, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. There is also an international connection to Singapore. It is served by Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Scoot. Kota Bharu is the destination of choice for the Perhentian Islands and for avoiding long hours on the road.

Located 15 kilometers to the west of the city, this small airport has a few noteworthy air links. A few weekly flights connect Kuantan with Penang and Singapore. Malaysia Airlines offers a daily flight to Singapore. Choosing Kuantan as a destination is only of real interest if you intend to explore the coastline away from the tourist trails. It's not the best choice for exploring Taman Negara or the Cameron Highlands, which are on the opposite side of the state.
