Markets to visit Mexico

Ixcuintla («where there are many dogs») represents one of the largest tobacco markets in the world, with 60% of Mexico's light tobacco grown and sold in the region.

Every Thursday and Sunday, the main streets of downtown Tonalá are transformed into a veritable paradise for lovers of handicrafts and Mexican culture. Spanning some 3 kilometers, Tonalá's Tianguis market is an immersive experience that's well worth a full day if you have the time. Whether you're looking for ceramics, traditional masks, sculptures, kitchenware or alebrijes, it's all within easy reach. To avoid the crowds, an early morning visit is ideal.

Commonly known as "El Mercado Libertad", this market opened in 1958 and is renowned as the largest covered market in Latin America. Covering an area of 40,000 m² and housing over 3,000 stalls on three levels, it offers an incredible variety of products, from handicrafts to food, clothing, electronics and esoteric accessories. Culinary specialties include the famous barbacoa tacos, pozoles and delicious tortas ahogadas.
