From August 18 to 25, Albania's most important religious pilgrimage takes place on the slopes of Mount Tomorr, overlooking Berat at an altitude of 2,416 meters. For three centuries, Bektashis have been making the ascent to honor Abbas ibn Ali (Baba Abaz Ali in Albanian), the first Imam of the Shiites and the most revered figure among Bektashis. According to local custom, Abbas ibn Ali's ashes were placed on the Tomorr by the founder of the Haci Bektas Veli brotherhood, around 1600.
