From the airport to the city centre Zambia

From/to Lusaka Airport. Kenneth Kaunda Airport is the main gateway for international tourists to Zambia. There is no public transportation to the city center, but you can take a private shuttle or a cab (US$20) or a VTC (Ulendo or cheaper: Yango) using the wifi network in terminal 2 or with a local sim card. They can pick you up at the parking lot in front of the airport but please specify your terminal. Count 120 to 150 kwachas the race. If you prefer to improvise, there are informal cabs at the gas station in front of the parking of Terminal 1, with whom you can negotiate the race to the city center in the same prices.

Arrival by train Zambia

From/to Tanzania. The famous TAZARA train (www.tazarasite.com) connects the two countries through breathtaking landscapes. A real adventure! The train departs from Kapiri Moshi, 200 km north of Lusaka, and runs to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The transfer is easily done by bus from the bus station in Lusaka. This train passes through Mbeya. It leaves on Tuesdays from New Kapiri Moshi and on Fridays from Dar es Salaam by express train (lasts more or less 48 hours, departure at 4pm), and conversely on Fridays from New Kapiri Moshi and on Tuesdays from Dar es Salaam by regular train (count 3 days, departure around 2pm). The 1st and2nd classes are sleeper (4-6 people), the3rd class only seats.

Arrival by boat Zambia

From/to Tanzania. The MV Liemba crosses the lake once a week in both directions, from Wednesday to Friday from Kigoma to Mpulungu and from Friday to Sunday from Mpulungu to Kigoma. It arrives in Mpulungu on Friday morning and leaves in the late afternoon. It takes about 40 hours to get from Mpulungu to Kigoma, in northern Tanzania, via the border post of Kasanga (reached in only 2 hours). Apart from the two terminals and Kasanga, the boat does not dock, but makes rendezvous offshore. The boat is thus literally boarded by a flock of boats in which smugglers who are paid by the client try to transfer as many travelers as possible from the villages along the coast. To make the trip to Kasama, you can book a berth: 2 people per cabin in 1st class (US$ 65 per person), 4 people per cabin in2nd class (US$ 55 per person). Sheets are provided. There are only 8 first class cabins.

Public transport Zambia

Combis, typical African minibuses, circulate in all cities and between all cities, but it is not easy for a European to take them and the safety conditions of some old vans are not always optimal.

With a driver Zambia

In Lusaka it is possible to order cabs and VTC through local mobile applications: Ulendo (cab) and Yango (VTC a little cheaper with cheap mini-car options up to sedan). It's always easier to have the pre-set rate on the app and cheaper than cabs.

By car Zambia

Driving in Zambia is easy on paved roads and in cities. The drivers are rather calm and slow. The road is not particularly dangerous, except at night of course, because no one is driving and encounters with buffalo or elephants are not uncommon.

It is complicated to drive in the national parks without being a long time adept of self-drive safari. But you can already reach the villages, camps and lodges by 4x4, it is the adventure! The car rental agencies also offer chauffeur driven 4x4s, especially for visiting the national parks. It is relaxing and more economical than flying for 4 people.
