Around Lusaka, game ranches and other estates have sprung up where families come to relax in the green on weekends. You can either drive to the ranch for a picnic and barbecue or have lunch at a restaurant with a terrace surrounded by greenery. These resorts are equipped with nice swimming pools and offer game drives for the whole family to discover peaceful herbivores.

What's very local

Despite the lack of infrastructure, Zambians have a keen interest in sports and recreation. Apart from the revered game of soccer, other sports are also gaining popularity. Boxing, for example, especially after national hero Lottie Mwale dominated African boxing for nearly 30 years.

The British influence has led to polo and polo-cross being played at a very high level, and Zambian teams, both men's and women's, win numerous international matches every year. However, this leisure activity remains exclusively practiced by white Zambians, descendants of British colonists. In a completely different register, Zambians enjoy playing isolo (local awale), a popular game of reflection.

In high season, it is always wise to book the most popular activities at Victoria Falls, namely bungee jumping or rafting down the Zambezi River, but also the helicopter tour of the falls.
