New Year's Day in the Gregorian calendar is celebrated by some Laotians, but especially by Laos' expat communities and tourists. January1st coincides with the peak of the tourist season, which means that many foreign tourists are present in the country on this occasion. Many festivities are organized in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, with fireworks, concerts, shows and special evenings. Some restaurants offer special menus, and the bars are packed with Westerners on the prowl.
