The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between States. Its purpose is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species to which they belong. Some 5 000 animal species and 28 000 plant species are protected by CITES from overexploitation to fuel international trade.
CITES controls and regulates the international trade in specimens of the species listed in its annexes, so it depends on whether or not to import its hunting trophies to France.
