Tourism in this region of the Canton of Bern in German-speaking Switzerland was born in the 19th century with the arrival of English people fascinated by these mountains with eternal snow: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Interlaken, between Lakes Thun and Brienz, boasts an exceptional location where tourists from all over the world flock today

Winter, summer, adventure and sensational sports are very popular in Interlaken, where it is indeed ideal to practice them

As far as accommodation is concerned, the region is overflowing with hotels, youth hostels, camping sites and apartments for rent. Even the almost new Interlaken Youth Hostel, which is conveniently located next to the Ost railway station, offers very reasonable prices for the region with a dormitory bed for CHF 30

Here I offer a selection of five tested and approved escapades

Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe

The Jungfrau railway, the Jungfraubahn, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Alps and the pride of the region. At its peak: Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, at 3454m altitude. People come here from all over the world and have been coming here since 1812

Up there, a 360 ° terrace with an exceptional view (if the weather is good) on the rock of the Sphinx, and the possibility of practicing some winter sports throughout the year

Price: 197.60 CHF. At this price I recommend the VIP-Pass 3 days at 235 CHF which will allow you to discover 5 mountains including Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe

Stroll and night in the mountains at Schynige Platte

This is my favorite getaway from this selection. For CHF 63, you can take a historic train ride to almost 2000m above sea level and back. Up there, among the best views of the region: Lake Thun, Lake Bienz, Interlaken, and above all Jungfraujoch. You can make hikes from 50 minutes to 6 hours, accessible to all

If we're going up there, we might as well spend the night: The Berghotel Schynige Platte offers you the ½ pension (hearty 5-course dinner + breakfast buffet) for 95CHF/person

Given the prices of restaurants and hotels in the valley, it's worth it. The soothing atmosphere, the mountain decoration and the breathtaking view from this adorable hotel run by a friendly couple and its young and dynamic team will invite you to forget yourself far from everything

It is also possible to walk 6 hours from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald-First. A magnificent walk between two mountains and the possibility to sleep on the spot, or to take the train back down into the valley

Visit of Ballenberg-Swiss Open-Air Museum

Allow a minimum of 3 hours to relive Swiss History by visiting this reinvented village (100 houses and 250 animals), by regions or traditions, you will find all the Swiss past, and therefore, its present. Ideal for those who are passionate about history, living, and children with whom you can spend a whole day without worries

Rate: 22 CHF/adult. Families 50 CHF

Boat trip, waterfall and Grandhotel Giessbach

Wherever you are on Lake Brienz you can take the boat to Giessbach. Here you can go on foot or take one of the oldest funiculars in Europe; discover the famous waterfall behind which you can walk; and then have a drink at the Grand Hotel Giessbach, a magnificent historic belle époque hotel (1872) with an absolutely dazzling view of Lake Brienz. You can of course also stay on site

Lakes towns and villages

To get from one end of the lakes to the other, your GPS will take you to the highway. I advise you the small roads which will allow you to discover villages, castles and especially the happiness of driving so close to this azure water

Don't hesitate to stop along the way, especially in Thun, the largest town in the region with a charming historic centre, also recommended for shopping; Interlaken where local tourism was born, or Brienz for more authenticity

To organize your stay, here are the 2 main actors of local tourism who will be able to guide you and make your stay unforgettable
