The ERA is the representative assembly of French established outside France. Its members have the task of defending the interests of these French people, whether in education, social protection or taxation. The Assembly of French Overseas meets on the joint initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development and its President at least twice a year. During the meetings, the Bureau shall be empowered to decide on any matter within the competence of the Assembly (on the situation of French established outside France and on any consular or general interest issues, including cultural, educational, economic and social plans). The ERA can be consulted by the government, as well as by the President of the National Assembly or by the President of the Senate on the situation of French established outside France and on any consular or general interest issues, including cultural, educational, economic or social interests. It is also consulted on the provisions concerning the French from abroad in the bills on Finance and financing of social Security.
