Colourful religious traditions are maintained in the countryside as well as in the city and religious festivals are fervent.
The Catholic spring festivals - Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and Corpus Christi - express the religious fervour in Austria. The churches are packed, and songs, liturgies, blessings and processions in the villages or in the mountains are legion. Among the most picturesque are the Passion Plays (Passion of Christ), the Pentecost procession with flowering poles brandished in the procession, the Prangstangen, or the prayers in the fields for Easter.
