It is celebrated every beginning of the year by the Akan ethnic groups in the cities of the east of the country mainly in December, but also in Abengourou in January. It pays homage to the nourishing tuber that saved the Ashanti people during their exodus from ancient Ghana to Côte d'Ivoire. On this occasion, the consumption of yam is forbidden, it is only used for purifying rites.
