AMARNATH YATRA

Primordial event in the season of the full moon. Thousands of Hindus go on pilgrimage to the temple-cave Amarnath (3 880 m), where Parvati would have discovered the secret of the creation and where Shiva, her husband, would have revealed to her the secret of the immortality. The cave shelters a stalagmite in the shape of lingam. The departure is usually from Srinagar (Kashmir), 141 km from the cave... The registration to cover the last kilometers is compulsory, because the organizing committee allows only 7,500 pilgrims per open road per day.
