From this gentle landscape emerges a strong cultural identity intimately linked to its history. Born of the formation of the Pyrenees, the hills and valleys of the Gers were inhabited very early on. The Romans brought the cultivation of vines and the method of preserving confit. The Vascons imported their traditions, language and stills. The French wars of unification created a territory of castles and fortified villages. The Wars of Religion left the region bloodless and scarred. It wasn't until the 19th century that a more peaceful path was mapped out. Ancient Gascony cultivates its fertile soils, raises geese and ducks, and looks after its barrels of Armagnac.
