PORT DE FAMAGOUSTE
Read moreThis commercial port (Gazimağusa Limanı, Λιμάνι της Αμμοχώστου/Limani tis Ammochostou) is linked by ferry to the Turkish port of Mersin. The Akgünler Denizcilik company (akgunlerdenizcilik.com) operates around three routes a week, and the 9-hour journey is overnight. Reputed to be the best in Cyprus in the Middle Ages, the port was redeveloped by the British in 1904, notably with the creation of a breakwater jutting out into the sea. Since 1974, as a result of the embargo, it has been used mainly for the exchange of goods with Turkey.
